Picnic, swing or fish at our beautiful pond

View or photograph wildlife

The 1874 Stonehouse Bed and Breakfast is a haven for Birders, Hunters, Fishermen, Hikers and Bikers. It is the perfect place for viewing and photographing wildlife.

We emphasize three prominent attractions:

  • Prairie Restoration Projects--three projects are in various stages of development

  • Birding-- our guests have identified over 85 species!

  • Our Library-- a collection on Kansas history, nature, people and authors totals over 300 books.

Lilacs Bloom in May & June

Tallgrass in Summer & Fall

Prairie Fires in March & April

Our 60 acres are great for exploration: a mile-long prairie trail leads by old stone fences, a stocked pond, towering trees, the banks of the Cottonwood River, ruins of old buildings and the prairie restoration projects. All provide great habitat for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

MAYOR WILHELMINA MORGAN
Mrs. William A. Morgan, who was elected Mayor of Cottonwood Falls in 1889, had been prominent in a crusade against the “dives and bootleggers” of the community. “(She) gave Cottonwood Falls the cleanest administration the town had ever had... Punishment was meted out to the prohibitory violators and evil-doers, good and plenty.”

Winnie Morgan was prominent in women's societies and clubs, and was Presidents of the Kansas Women's Press Club, of the Kansas Women's Suffrage Association and of the Kansas Women's Republican Association.

Her husband founded "The Chase County Leader" (one of the precursors of today's newspaper, the "Chase County Leader-News"). He sold the paper in 1903 to William C. Austin, a son of the James Austin who was the original owner/builder of the stone house that today is this bed and breakfast, "1874 Stonehouse, LLC".
